When I teach people to declutter their home, I always recommend they start in the kitchen.
The kitchen is truly the heart of the home. We go there at least twice a day. And if you have kids, admit it, they’re in there all the time! In the fridge… In the food cabinet… Wanting to cook with you… Or just standing there (talking incessantly) while they watch you work… It’s the heart of the home.
If your kitchen counters are clear and your sink is empty, the kitchen becomes an inviting place to be; the thought of preparing food is no longer daunting.
It will also be easier to keep up with a routine for efficient daily maintenance. Last but not least, when your kitchen is in order it sets the tone for the rest of the house. Once you get your kitchen pared down to just what you need, it will feel so good and you will have the motivation to do the same thing in your entire home.
The first step to take before you can really let go of the majority of the clutter, you need to come face-to-face with your fantasy self:
Many times we collect things and own things because we have a life we want to portray. I call it a fantasy life. For example: Someone may not be good at cooking, entertaining or decorating, but at the same time that person really wants to be like Martha Stewart. So they have fancy dinner party décor… even though they never host a dinner party. Their cupboards contain a variety of tart pans and a full cake decorating kit… but it never gets used. Their fantasy life and real life don’t line up. Let’s be real, accept who we are, what our talents are and let go of the fantasy life we think we’re supposed to have.
Different people have different talents, which makes our world a wonderful place. Embrace yours and let go of the desire to be someone different than you are. Doing so will help you release all the items that you felt you should have, but don’t actually compliment who you are.
Setting yourself up for successful decluttering can be easy. One small focused action every day creates a ripple effect, which will eventually lead to a complete change in you entire home. From clutter on all the counters to open clear surfaces in every room. It is possible, and you can accomplish it!
