Everyone’s idea of minimalism is different and that is very important to remember. When you are thinking about embracing minimalism, the whole point of it is to keep true to your authentic self. What is important to you, the things you enjoy and the life you want to live. I’m excited to share some real life examples of what minimalism looks like in different homes around the world. If you would like to share a tour of your home, please contact me here with “HOME TOUR” in the subject line.
And now, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Jennifer. Jennifer can be found over at Homekeeping Heart and has kindly offered to share some images of her home with us:
What square footage do you have in your home?
It is 2400 sq.ft. It’s the biggest home we have ever had by far and it is much much too big for me! This summer we will be downsizing when we move to England. All the homes are much smaller there! I’m excited for that.
How many people live in your home?
We have 8 children ages 2-15. So 10 of us live here 🙂
What was your motivation for embracing simplicity in your life?
I have always loved and been drawn to simplicity and minimalism. I think I was born this way, so it comes naturally to me. I have always just loved the feel of clean, clear, cozy spaces. And I love the idea of only having what you need or love.
How has minimizing your possessions made your life better?
I love the quote “the best way to enjoy your favorite things every day is to only own your favorite things.” Work and life becomes such a joy when you’re only working with and surrounded by your favorite things. Clutter causes such stress!
What was your biggest challenge in the middle of decluttering?
The biggest challenge is definitely having so many children and a large house. The stuff just seems to keep multiplying and filling every inch of this house! Decluttering is a never ending process here.
Did you involve your family or were you on your own?
When it comes to their possessions, my kids do have a say in what stays in their lives, but they do have a responsibility to take care of what they insist they keep!
What unexpected reactions did you get from friends or family seen your new way to cluttered home?
There hasn’t really been a big change although over the years I have gradually become more and more of a minimalist. I do sometimes wonder what people think about my lack of decor and other things, but ultimately it’s about what works for you and your family and what makes you happy, so it doesn’t really matter.
