Being a foodie and particularly a real food foodie, I’m always bothered by the excess of sugary junk that gets devoured on Halloween. No one, and I mean no one, needs that much candy, let alone the chemical additives that are included to it to make it taste acceptable.
Our kids don’t eat a lot of candy, since they don’t eat much sugar on a regular basis it only takes a couple pieces of candy before they say they’re done.
But I do like having a variety of real food treats that they can enjoy and I don’t cringe about the artificial food dyes.
Nature is filled with beautiful, vibrant and tasty colors. Why not enjoy that real thing, rather than an artificial copy?!
1 cup black grapes
2 cups strawberries, quartered
3 cups cantaloupe melon, cubed
1 1/2 cups pineapple, cut into chunks
2 bananas, sliced*
Place 1/4 to 1/2 cup (depending on glass size) fruit in glasses, graduating the colors from dark at the bottom to light at the top:
Black grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe
Cantaloupe, pineapple, bananas
Strawberries, cantaloupe, pineapple
Whipped Topping Ingredients:
1 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons maple syrup
Whip heavy cream until peaks form. Drizzle in maple syrup and mix until combined. Spoon whipped cream onto the top of all the parfaits. Serve immediately or chill until ready.
*Bananas: if you are not serving immediately, dip the banana slices into a bowl of salted water to keep from turning brown (don’t worry- you won’t taste the salt!) One pinch of sea salt to one cup water. Stir to mix salt and then dip the banana slices.
