Last week I purchased Courtney Carver’s Project 333 Capsule Wardrobe Course. Yes, I have a minimal amount of clothing, but it’s not exactly “capsule” and I get a fair amount of capsule wardrobe questions, so I figured I’d better learn how to put one together!
The idea is pretty simple: 3 months of clothes (which would be an average season) and 33 items.
I honestly got a lot out of it and am really pleased with the results:
First off, listening to the webinar that Courtney did was great. Tons of great info and I found it really helpful.
I realized that I don’t have “outfits” and though I have a fairly limited amount of clothing, and all the colors coordinate, I still hem and haw at times when I’m dressing up. I have my typical jeans, fitted jewel tone top and danskos for everyday but when it comes to dressing up, I don’t have any “go-to” combos that I love, just a few favorite separates.
That right there was a lightbulb moment for me- I have a limited wardrobe, but the pieces weren’t put together with intentionality. Of course!
Working through the journal questions was really good for me. I’ve journaled my thoughts on many things and in my online decluttering course, I ask people to start the decluttering process with journaling very specific questions and that makes a significant difference in their decluttering success.
I really enjoyed listening to Courtney’s playlist as I worked through my closet. It really did help the process of working through and realizing, that even with being a minimalist and truly having a minimal amount of clothing, I still had things in my closet that shouldn’t be there.
And I know we pile guilt on ourselves when we decide to get rid of clothes- I’ve spent too much money on clothing and when it doesn’t get worn, I have to face that when I decide to let it go. But I know myself, I don’t like running errands, which means I’m going to sit on them forever before I make it to the consignment shop, I don’t recommend having garage sales either, which is why I love when she said:
I recommend giving them away. They weren’t making money in your closet and they probably won’t now either. Instead, get paid immediately with clear space in your closet.

This day was pretty easy for me- I decided to stick with her rules… except, I’m going to follow Marie Kondo’s advice and keep all season’s in my closet. When it came to putting somethings back into my closet: my workout clothes are already minimal, I let go of my yoga pants after recently losing baby-weight, and I have one outfit that I wear when working on the house- mowing the yard, painting walls, etc.
After I sorted the items from day 3, I was too excited to wait for the next day for the next step, so I jumped right in to day 4.
I have to say, I loved listening to Courtney’s helpful audio clips when she talked about overcoming fear and comparing ourselves. It’s always such an encouragement to listen to things that other people have learned as they walked through their life “lessons”.
Listing the items I need was helpful. I’ve been really intentional with the tools I keep in my kitchen, so why not with my wardrobe?
This was the fun part. My closet was even more open than it was before, everything did have a purpose and I felt so good about having only clothing that makes me feel good about myself. They all fit, look good and fit my personality.
I didn’t take a picture. My closet is awkward- our house is 133 years old. It’s a “walk-in” closet and I simply can’t back up far enough to take a picture- so I didn’t. I did manage one semi-decent picture of my dresser drawer:
Brian and I share a dresser, it’s in our walk in closet, because we only need one side for hanging clothes, so we put the dress on the other side. I have one drawer for accessories and underclothes/socks, etc and one drawer for shirts and pants. I like Marie Kondo’s method of folding. This is one of the reasons I can keep all seasons of clothes in my closet/dresser: everything fits in one drawer. Sidenote: I can’t fold my pants and have them vertical- I only have 2 pairs of jeans and one pair of shorts, they just don’t stay upright.
Journaling again today- which was excellent. Courtney asked some terrific questions, and I’ve asked myself quite a few of them in the past, as I have worked through my minimalist journey. But some of my answers have changed and I’m curious to revisit them in 3 months and see if my answers have changed again.
There are more than just the 6 days worth of “lessons” in the P333 course and I enjoyed reading and listening to all of it.
I was very inspired. I took advice and spent a day with my clothes – deciding if things really fit my body type, if they were the right size and fit my personality.
I was able to get rid of quite a few clothing pieces and even surprised myself. I got rid of 13 things, that just weren’t “me”.
