Minimal landscaping is going to mean different things for different people. For some, it means rocks instead of yard, for others it may mean no-mow grass without shrubs or gardens and for others, it might be an entire lawn covered with native drought-resistant plants.
There are pros and cons to all, but if you’re looking for ways to cut your maintenance, whether it be mowing, watering or weeding- here are a few options.
FYI- This is written for those who desire minimal yard work.
1. Xeriscaping. Recently a reader shared the idea of xeriscaping with me and I’ve completely fallen in love with it. This works for people who do not need a yard for little ones or pets to run around in. The idea is to use plants native to your area, that are drought resistant. The whole garden takes less watering- about 1″ of water vs. 2.5″ that grass requires. In the beginning, it’s a large investment of design and research (or hiring a landscaper), but in the end, you have a beautiful array of plants and flowers that require very little maintenance.
2. Flowering trees and shrubs are not required. It’s ok to just have a grass yard. If you live in a neighborhood with restrictive covenants that requires landscaping, there are many low-maintenance varieties, depending on your location. Pick varieties that grow slowly and won’t need pruning.
3. Rocks are your friends! Rocks in the yard can look very attractive, having different sizes, colors and adding plants, like specialty grasses, moss and succulents can be visually appealing, but require very little maintenance. A quick search on Pinterest can give you ideas on how to have more than just a rock lawn.
4. Keep your garden small and manageable. If you want to have a garden area on your lawn, just focus on one or 2 areas. Avoid placing “garden” all around the perimeter of the yard. Or, use several large containers, to grow just a few garden plants that you enjoy. Remember that flowers and vegetables need daily watering.
