How to Organize DVDs

Keeping the DVD and Blu Ray collection at bay can be a challenge in our entertainment driven society. Many of us have book cases full of our favorite movies, shows and video games.
Before purchasing any organization tools, evaluate whether or not these are items that you want to keep. Only keep ones that you truly enjoy and watch over and over. Let the others go. Even if you haven’t watched them yet. If you have any that belong to other people, make it a point to return them this week.
Next, pull out all the cases and sort them into the categories you want.

Example:

  • Action
  • Romance
  • Documentaries
  • Childrens
  • Games

Get one (or however many are needed) DVD Wallets. I got two of these 64 count. If you have less movies, get the smallest ones.
Put the children’s movies in their own case, so picking their own movie is easier. It’s good for them to be in charge of putting their movies back into the right case and keep in the habit of taking care of their own items.
Then start placing the discs in the order you prefer into each wallet. Discard all empty DVD and Blu Ray cases. Be sure to mark them on your Decluttering Chart!
Having space on shelves and in cupboards is such a calming sensation. And these DVD wallets make finding a movie to watch a complete breeze.

I love this idea! Why didn’t I think of doing this before we moved all of ours from place to place??? I mean we got rid of a lot of them, but this takes up so much less space! It’s brilliant! Rachel, where have you been all of my life? Just kidding, you HAVE been there for almost half of it! Ha ha! 🙂 I miss seeing you, my friend!

Totally works! We did this a few years ago when we were moving nearly every year. We realized we never remembered to put them back in boxes so just dumped all of them a bought a few large DVD books/wallets. Did the same for CD’s. They look nice in the TV cabinet and the kids like that we made them each their own book. Of course with downloadable movies we have needed to buy any real copies in 2 years!

Ug, totally forgot… put the old VCR tapes in under the bed storage bins and slide it under the couch 🙂

I’m considering doing this for a collection of DVDs number in about 50 to 75. I’m wondering if anyone has regretted throwing out the DVD cases?
