My Simple and Healthy Medicine Cabinet

Have you ever wanted to know what my medicine cabinet looks like? I try to keep it as minimal as possible. Simplicity means I can get to what I need quickly and everything is always easy to find.

I purposely keep a very limited amount of man made items and over the years, it’s been very rare that I’ve had to run to a drug store… and mainly, that’s just been for bandages.


My Simple and Healthy Medicine Cabinet


Essential Oils. Essential oils are wonderful and can assist you in your health and the health of your family. I recommend purchasing from a well established company that can guarantee the the potency of their product.

  • Peppermint. Helps with allergies, sore throats and headaches.
  • Lavender. Helps with allergies, itchy bug bites, healing wounds
  • Lemon. Helps with allergies, energizing, cleaning products.
  • Melaleuca. Helps alleviate bee stings discomfort, promotes healthy immune function.
  • Respiratory blend. Assists clear airways and breathing.
  • Protective blend. Promotes healthy immune function.

Tylenol, Ibuprofen. Just in case- but we prefer to use these as a last resort.

Fermented cod liver oil or at the very least, vitamin d3. As far as vitamin D goes: good, better and best. This has made a huge difference in our everyday health. We have avoided viruses and have a wonderful general well being.

Turmeric. Turmeric is like a powerful antibiotic,without the bad side effects. My husband takes this when he gets bronchitis (which is about twice a year).

Grapefruit seed extract. If our family gets sick, it tends to be in the sinuses. Grapefruit seed extract clears that up and really gets rid of colds, sinus infections.

Charcoal. Activated charcoal is a wonderful tool to keep in your medicine cabinet. You can make a paste, put it on stings, bug bites, spider bites and it draws the toxins out. You can take it if you are having die-off symptoms (too much homemade kraut or kefir!), excessive diarrhea, bloating and even as a tooth paste to whiten teeth!

Garlic Capsules. Garlic is wonderful for fighting illnesses of any kind, but I keep these around specifically for ear infections. When any of the kids get an ear ache, I cut open a garlic capsule, squeeze it into their ear and place a cotton ball over it. We do this for 3 or 4 days. This has kept my kids from having to have antibiotics for ear infections since my 2nd child was 6 months old.

Magnesium oil. Magnesium Oil makes a big difference in headaches, migraines and particularly restless leg syndrome. I used it every day when I was pregnant because RLS got so bad. As long as I use it regularly, I don’t have RLS.

Epsom Salts. Epsom salts are so great. Grandma knew what she was doing when she always had them on hand! We used them for soaking after a hard days work, relieving sore muscles, and helping the kids calm down if they are wound tight at night.

Apple Cider Vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is another great go-to for almost any ailment. You can drink it to improve mood, hormone balance, acid reflux and digestion. You can soak your feet in it to get rid of fungal infections, treat sunburns and rinse all the soap build up away from your hair.

Supermom vitamins. I love Supermom vitamins. They give me energy and make me feel good. If I miss taking them, I will feel it and be dragging the next day. This is an important step in my efforts of providing real food to my family.

DLPA. If I need motivation… This. Is. It. DLPA or L-Phenylalanine, is an amino acid. Many of us Americans are suffering from a shortage of amino acids. Amino acids are found in foods, and because of the Standard American Diet (SAD), we just don’t get enough healthy complete foods.

True Calm. For those days. That’s right, I have them too! When I feel like I’m going crazy and I start hearing Stewie’s voice (Ma. Ma. Mom. Mommy. Mama. Mother…) and if someone whines just one more time (go ahead. TRY ME.) I take True Calm. It’s probably saved lives. Multiple times. And it also means I’m not reaching for a bottle of wine at 11:00 AM.

Raw Honey. I keep raw honey around for cuts and scrapes. It’s antibacterial properties are so great and it aids in healing. Besides that, it’s delicious, and we eat it in whatever we can.

Ultimately: food. Food is medicine. Feed yourself and the family whole, real, traditional foods and you are well on your way to better health. More than any supplement, drug or essential oil out there. Get grass fed free range meat, eggs and dairy. Organic and local fruits and veggies. Eat butter and/or coconut oil. Learn to make ferments like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and kombucha. Reduce grain and sugar consumption. Don’t drink commercial soda pop. If you do all that, you will be healthier than most Americans!

      Though, during the winter months, I try to include turmeric in my cooking (chili, soup, meatballs, etc), since it’s so terrific for us. 🙂

    Love it. Just wondering if you’ve ever looked in to tea tree oil? I use it for just about everything! There are so many uses..
    Thank you for this post, going to add afew more to my cabinet now.

      Thanks Victoria, I do use tea tree! Another name for it is melaleuca and I have it listed up there. It’s actually the first essential oil I ever got. I think I’ve been using it for at least 10 years and I totally agree with you!

        This is wonderful. I wish more people would follow your lead. We keep the garlic and cider vinegar in the fridge, and the honey (I use it for cuts too) in the kitchen cupboard. I use lemon and salt and white vinegar a lot.

    Hi, Rachel! How about muscle and joint pain? Is there a natural remedy for that? I’m pregnant and don’t want to take Tylenol if I don’t have to and I’m interested in starting a simple and natural medicine cabinet. Now seems as good a time as any!
