What is the Mins Game decluttering challenge?
“MinsGame” is short for Minimalism Game, a fun monthly decluttering challenge created by The Minimalists. This challenge is designed to simplify your life and space, as well as promote the minimalist lifestyle.
The rules are simple! Get rid of one item on the first day of the month, two items on the second, etc.
Some participants like to run the challenge backwards. So for July, that would mean decluttering THIRTY-ONE items on day one, thirty on day two, and so on.
The first one gets gradually more challenging, while the second option gets gradually easier.
Whichever way you choose to get rid of extra junk this month, our July tally chart helps you track your progress to stay motivated the whole way through!

July Mins Game Themes
If you’re someone who often participates in the monthly Mins Game, you might be ready for a little shake up. Here are some themes you can try to make your July decluttering month a little more interesting!
1. Summer Clean-Out
You should’ve had the opportunity to use your summer items by now, so it’s a great time to start decluttering. It’s that happy balance between having lived enough of the season to know what you actually used, and one last opportunity to find things that you DO want to use but haven’t yet.
Go through:
- Summer hats
- Sunglasses and accessories
- Swimsuits
- Beach and pool gear
- Sunscreens and lotions

2. All-American Declutter
Cook up an Independence Day celebration, decluttering style! Here are a few options:
- Declutter red items one day, white the next, and blue after that!
- Fourth of July merch and decor.
- Barbecue and picnic supplies.
- Go through your history and reference books–first to declutter unwanted titles, then again to consider your collection–anything outdated, missing, or incomplete? I know we’re decluttering, but keeping a stock of important physical media can be helpful! After all, buying is not owning in the digital age. If you’re looking to build your American history paper collection, I recommend starting with these titles:

3. Road-Trip Ready
This is a good mind exercise to use when decluttering: Pretend you’re about to embark on a month-long road trip. What items would you take?
If something isn’t important enough to take up precious car space, consider decluttering!

4. Back-To-School
Got kiddos? Time to clear out the old backpacks and school supplies to make room for the new school year!
Other categories to tackle:
- books
- pens and pencils
- art and craft supplies
- bags
- kids’ clothes and shoes
- sports equipment

5. Boycott Boot-Out
Boycotts are a classic American way to get your voice heard! They’re also incredibly helpful for curating the clutter-free home of your dreams.
As you add companies to your boycott, consider the items related to it.
For example, boycotting Starbucks to support labor unions? Follow that theme and declutter your mugs and coffee accessories! This is a great opportunity to get the kids involved, explain boycotting, and teach by example that our most impactful votes are the ones we cast with our dollars. 🇺🇸
