What is Mins Game?

Mins Game is a month-long decluttering challenge invented by The Minimalists. Here are the rules:

  • Grab your decluttering chart above
  • Choose your method of play–regular or reversed
  • For regular, you’ll declutter ONE item on the FIRST day of the month.
  • On the SECOND DAY of the month, declutter TWO ITEMS. And so on.
  • For reversed play, declutter THIRTY-ONE items on the first of the month.
  • On the second of the monty, declutter THIRTY items. And so on.

No matter which method of play you choose, you’ll have decluttered 496 items by the end of October!

Here are a few October twists you can put on the Mins Game for bonus fun!

Orange, red, and yellow colored items

I love a completely arbitrary challenge, like decluttering items by color. It breaks up the monotony on a long journey, as decluttering tends to be.

If you enjoy this type of challenge, I also recommend our Decluttering Scavenger Hunt!

Halloween costumes & decor

Since we’re already thinking about and using any Halloween supplies we have on hand, now’s a great time to evaluate what we want to keep and what it might be time to pass on.

Cozy drinks

Tackle the drink station this month! Cocoa, coffee, and tea accessories are all on the chopping block. Consider:

  • Mugs
  • Tea bags and loose leaf
  • Cozies
  • Stirring implements
  • Coffee pots and other accessories
  • Flavors and syrups
  • Travel mugs and cups

Sweater weather reset

Take a look at your seasonal wardrobe. What cozy items have gotten itchy? Which ones do you just not care to wear anymore? See if there’s someone you can bless with these items–local shelters and houseless neighbors are always grateful for a little extra warmth this time of year.

Clear the cobwebs

Tackle those tangly messes, like the cord collection! You might extend this theme to belts and scarves, too.

Having a theme for decluttering makes it more engaging, fun, and helps you to think outside the box a little!
